I dont think they would let you open the box at the port. So you would need a vehicle to put the box on. You may also need to pay for their forklift to help. If you make any booboos you may have to pay $50 per day storage fees while they are being sorted out... I tend to think an agent is worth it... first time doing it. But if you research it thoroughly you could do it yourself...

You are welcome.

Hi Sapoty, 26 May
Its looking great, I can't actually get to the bank until Friday, because friday is the only later opening for banks (they shut at 4pm and 5pm on Fridays) and I'm at work, and because its awkward with the US$ transfer (it took 45mins last time) so that means you wouldn't see the money until Monday the following week.
So....what next?

That sounds good, black with white trim for the seats, will you also change the wheel cover to match?

I'm disappointed that you couldn't attach the front parcel rack, is there no other option, being a female i need bag carrying space, I appreciate that you put on the electric start, so i would pay extra if you could figure out something, bend the other front bar to allow for the bag rack, is that at all possible?

Thanks for everything so far, its looking wonderful,

My workshop manager says there is no maroon vinyl available at the moment in Vietnam, sorry, and suggests the possibility of black/white seats so that the white vinyl matches the white on the paint work? Or some other preference?

Another possibility is for you to get the red vinyl darkened. It may be possible with paint like this:

Sorry about this unforseen issue.

Hi there Sapoty, 17 Apr

Thanks for your email, much appreciated.

I'm sending the document to show that i've transfered 50% approx. of the price for the scooter.

As i thought i couldn't do it through either of my small credit unions (they were quite baffled)
Anyway went to our family account at Bank SA it still wasn't effortless, we are a bit backward
here in Adelaide, it took them 45minutes to arrange. ...

Anyway done now, so... how long will the whole process of restoration take, do you think?

Also i noticed you had something called a Flyscreen in your accessories, liarinf but no photo, is this
a "windshield" if so could you find a photo for me because i think i'd like one.

Thanks so much,
Marie

Dear Marie, 17 Apr

Thanks for re-doing your order. I dug up this email that I sent to a wholesale buyer in New York that will help clarify your issue about quality:
I want to get clearer with you about your and my expectations regarding the mechanical condition of our scooters.
My workshop's procedure is that they disassemble and clean the engines and repair or replace any components that are significantly worn or damaged. The electrical components are replaced with new items. In the vast majority of cases they replace bearings but if a bearing shows negligible wear it is possible they may choose to leave it installed. The major components like the crankshaft are forty years old and may not have perfect alignment etc. But the scooter is expected and tested to be in good working condition when it leaves the workshop.
Generally professional Vespa mechanics will do their best to rubbish a vintage Vespa from Asia because:
1. they don't like cheaper scooters dragging down the price of scooters and replacing sales of new scooters,
2. they like to make lots of money by finding imperfections and exaggerating their importance to the customer, and
3. there are lots of unscrupulous Asian restorers who just make the scooter look good but do not dismantle and clean and refurbish the motor.
The professional Vespa mechanics also prefer to use their own (profitable) parts for repairs and don't like to accept parts we can airmail to you.
So if by chance a scooter from us develops a problem please don't take it to "Mr Vespa Central" for repairs. Please first dialog with us about it. Then, if necessary, find a happy scooter mechanic who is realistic about vintage machines and not trying to squeeze every dollar out of you. Someone who is willing to work with us, not against us. Or even better, try to fix the problem yourself. If a problem develops my workshop mechanic will bend over backwards to help you solve the problem.
That being said, I do not expect a problem. Our scooters will start easily, and be fully operational. We can verify this with a video of your scooter(s) being started and running before we ship to you.
Best regards,
Sapoty

23:45
You entered that specification as a quote.

Are you deciding on what extras you actually want?
23:46
Yawn....I have to go to bed soon

Marie: No, i'm firm with that, i'm just writing you an email, re the colour not sure if you would call it purple or pink its the one in the example R215.
23:47
Also thanks for you offer of the 50% deposit and photos much appreciated.
23:48
Can i transfer the equivalent of us dollars which would be heaps easier, i've just checked on xe currency and the total is about $4000 aud. so could i transfer $2000 aud

me: specifying R2-15 is enough because I will just forward the photo to the workshop
23:50
Your payment really has to go into my US$ account as US$ because otherwise it is too risky for me that exchange rates go haywire

but you dont have to get the first payment exact
23:51
Marie: ok understand, i'll just have to check how that is done

me: we can get it right with the second payment and a 3rd minor adjustment in AUD if necessary

if you have internet banking it is pretty easy
23:52
which bank are you with

Marie: yes i do, i just didn't know you could specify another currency

me: ?
23:53
you just use the International payments link

westpac charge $20

Marie: i have 2 small credit union accounts you proably have never heard of. ------------ and -------------- funny eh?

Ok will do that tomorrow,

me: wow strange names!

Hi Marie, 16 Apr

I did check with Ebay on a link i saw for your businessess and i couldn't find it, have you finished trading on Ebay?

I only have one listing on eBay at the moment and I relist it manually after it ends. You may have looked for it before I relisted it.

How can i ensure that i get a quality product for my money from you.
Every dealer will say they are reputable and will give warranty but when it comes to the crunch I am in Adelaide and can't really be knocking on your door looking for answers if things go awry.

Buying directly from a seller in SE Asia is extremely risky because of the culture of corruption. I am speaking from experience after being ripped off by a man called Sang.

Buying from me is about as safe as you can get because I am a licensed motor dealer. That means you can email a complaint to the NSW Dept of Fair Trading if you are not happy. I am bound by the govt regulations which are quite strict.

That being said, I have no interest or desire to sell people problems. If there are any problems then we will bend over backwards to solve them. I am have the support of my very experienced Vespa mechanic. We have been operating this business for 5 years and have a strong interest in providing quality scooters to create happy customers.

I can offer you the following strategy: Pay 50% on order and then when your scooter is complete we will send you photos and a video of the engine being started and running and the gears being used to spin the rear wheel. After your approval we will send photos of your scooter being packed for shipping and request the balance. Then we ship the scooter and send you the documentation by courier.

I hope to serve you soon. Please place you finalised order through my website and I will check it.

regards
Sapoty

Hi again Sapoty, 16 Apr

Thanks for your answers.

I'm still a bit nervous about ordering and paying for something unseen, you probably realise there a lots of horror stories about vespas that look great when they arrive but are shonky, paint over rust, dodgy engine parts and so on, many of these people (restorers of vespas) do profess quality work and have fancy looking websites; so trying to make a decision is hard.

I did check with Ebay on a link i saw for your businessess and i couldn't find it, have you finished trading on Ebay?

Dear Marie, 15 Apr

Could you answer a couple of questions please?
1. What is the difference between 3 port and 5 port engines?
The ports are entry and exit holes for fuel and smoke in the cylinder. 5 port engines can run faster because of the easier flow of fuel and exhaust thru the engine.

2. I'm trying to select colours from your colour sections and all i get is weird artists/gallery shots nothing to do with motorscooters.
The colours link to an art website. Can you just note the codes for the colours?

3. What port charges, fees etc. (approximately) will i need to pay in Adelaide?
Last time I saw the import charges for Australia they were $700-$800 total.

4. How easy is it for me to collect the Scooter from the port warehouse instead of using an agent?
I don't think they allow you to open the box so you would have to have a ute or trailer that the box can be fork-lifted onto.
The risk of not using a customs broker is that if you make a mistake then you could be charged storage fees which can be about $50 per day.

cheers,
Sapoty

If we have problem again i will send you the difference with paypal if it is ok with you? Thanks again and i am sorry for this.

Thanks George!

Dear George, 19 May
Your payment has been received with thanks. Although you sent the US$1,000 it was either converted to USD at an expensive rate and/or had fees taken out by an intermediary bank. The amount that was received by our bank was not the full amount. You may wish to take up this matter with your bank.

I phoned my bank and requested a statement/document from them showing the amount of funds actually received by them from your bank prior to currency conversion and fees. This document will arrive within a week and if you require a copy, I can send/fax it to you.

Insert bank cells from spreadsheet

Expected amount = $1,000.00
Amount received =$965.50
Outstanding Balance = $889.50 due on packing photos.
George, please ask your bank how to make sure my bank receives the full balance when you make your next payment.
thanks,
Sapoty

Hello, ............11 May

I have one question about order form. Do you want to fill an order form again from the beggining?
After ordering the scooter you want to send you the total cost (Total Shipping Investment) by bank transfer in US dollars to your bank account (details below) and email to you the bank transfer receipt number.
Do you want something else after that?

Thanks again!

Hello George, 11 May

I have one question about order form. Do you want to fill an order form again from the beggining?

If you can do that, please, it would help me a lot (with Order instead of Quote).

After ordering the scooter you want to send you the total cost (Total Shipping Investment) by bank transfer in US dollars to your bank account (details below) and email to you the bank transfer receipt number.
Yes, if you prefer I can accept 50% on order and 50% on pre-shipping photos.

Do you want something else after that?
No, on receipt of your payment we will commence restoration and be ready to ship in 3 weeks. After shipping we will send you documentation for import and registration.

Please check that these documents will be OK for registration in Greece:

regards,
Sapoty

The fumication (emissions) certificate is not applicable to vintage 1960's and 70's vehicles. It has not been applied to my customers in Western EU. eg Germany, UK, Austria, etc. Please check with your Motor Registry Department.

You are welcome!

George, 4 May

You sound like a man of action so I will get straight to the point:

1. Find out what price you can expect to get for a beautifully restored 1960's Vespa when sold from your showroom. (US$4,000+ is the current price in the USA)

2. Find out what the taxes and port costs are to import 1960's scooters from overseas.

3. Check our wholesale prices via:
http://www.vespas.biz/prices.htm

4. Determine your profit margin.

5. Consider ordering one or two sidecars matched to your scooters (they sell well and attract a lot of attention)

6. Place your order via (4 or more scooters)
http://www.vespas.biz/prices.htm

Kind regards,
Sapoty
